Air-cooled heat exchangers

Air-cooled heat exchangers (ACHE) are custom designed heavy-duty fin tube heat exchangers. They allow the direct cooling by air of various process mediums. ACHEs are used in applications in many industries, such as power, chemical, ORC plant, Oil & Gas, steel and several other industries.

An Application of the Components:

Tube Bundle: This is the heat transfer surface over which the fluid flows and transfers heat into the fins and subsequently into the air.
Fins: Thin metal surfaces attached to the tubes that increase the effective heat transfer area.
Headers/Manifolds: These collect and distribute the fluid into the tubes.
Fans: These generate airflow across the tube bundles, driven by motors and most often use axial fans.
Fan Shrouds: Guide and optimize the airflow.
Support Structures: Frame and supports to hold the assembly in place.
Plenum Chamber: Uniformes air distribution to the tube bundle.

Working Principle:

The fluid to be cooled passes through the tubes, and air passes over the tubes and fins externally.

Heat is transferred:

From the hot liquid to the walls of the tube.
To the fins, through the tube walls.
From the fins to the fluid air.

The air, which is heated by being Radiant-absorbers, is blown out in to atmosphere.

Applications

Petrochemical Plants: Cooling hydrocarbons or refining products.
Power Plants: Cooling steam or other heat-transfer fluids.
Chemical Processing: Heat dissipation resulting from chemical reactions.
HVAC – Heat rejection: Air-conditioning or refrigeration systems.

Advantages

Handle high-pressure and high-temperature fluids.
Wide application for materials to suit corrosive fluids.
Designs can be customized for specific applications.
Cleaning and maintaining are made easy (especially with removable tube bundles).

Disadvantages

Very large,therefore, space-consuming.
Costlier than compact alternatives like plate heat-exchangers.
There is a possibility of thermal stress if the design is not good.
